Thirty Years In, Still Finding More
By Bob Parker
I have been studying with Master Yang for about thirty years and have attended most of his summer taiji camps. I think the best way to learn taiji is to study with a good teacher, but that is not always possible. The taiji camps offer a chance to spend a lot of time studying with a high level teacher and highly motivated students. That will always up your game. The online classes add another option.
Of course students will still have to practice on their own, and it helps to have a local teacher and other people to practice with, but the online classes offer a great deal more. For me, the best thing about the course is the ability to watch the class as many times as I want, any time, any place.
The format of the class is to first review the forms from the previous class, followed by a demonstration of the new forms. We then practice the new form together. During the class we practice sitting, standing, and lying qigong. At some point Laoshi will have a sit down talk about some aspect of taiji or qigong, and how we can bring the wisdom of Chinese culture into our training and our lives.
The classes are carefully planned to ensure that we get maximum benefit from our training. My favorite part of the class is the introduction and practice of new forms. Master Yang demonstrates the form many times, talks about the internal energies in each posture, and shows the martial applications. I feel very lucky to have access to these wonderful teachings.
There is so much information in every class that it is great to have them recorded so I can watch them over and over. I feel that studying the pao chui form in this class has given me a deeper understanding of the form and the energies that are embedded in it. The martial applications of this form are very powerful and out front, and that has given me a greater understanding and respect for taiji as a serious martial art. I am grateful for the chance to study this ancient art in a new way through the internet. Thanks to Master Yang, Grandmaster Feng, and all our teachers.
